Why Do We Carve Pumpkins at Halloween?
Folklore, combined with history gives us the Jack O’ Lantern. According to legend, a man known as Stingy Jack tricked the devil into buying him a drink by changing himself into a coin. Once the devil had transformed himself, Jack trapped the devil in his pocket. And, even though the devil managed to escape, Jack once again trapped the devil, this time, in a tree.
Later, when Jack died, he not allowed into heaven because of his bad behavior while on Earth. But, since the devil had promised not to take Jack’s soul (even though he’d been tricked by Jack several times), he wasn’t allowed into the underworld either. As a result, Jack was cursed to roam the earth with only a glowing coal to light his path.
Today, we carve pumpkins thanks to Irish tradition and we put lights inside them to ward off troublesome spirits, demons, and ghosts thanks to Irish legend.
